UM rector leads delegation to Singapore to deepen cooperation with universities
MACAU, September 2 - Yonghua Song, rector of the University of Macau (UM), led a delegation to Singapore to visit several universities, including the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). During the visits, the delegation exchanged views with representatives of these universities on higher education development, research innovation, and talent cultivation, further strengthening UM’s partnerships with leading universities in Singapore and expanding its international cooperation in medicine, business, as well as design and technology.
Song said that UM, as a university rooted in Macao with a mission to contribute to the development of the Greater Bay Area, integrate into the country, and engage with the world, is committed to expanding its cooperation network with world-class universities. He noted that the visit to Singapore has not only strengthened the foundation for UM’s cooperation with universities in Singapore, but also enabled the university to learn from their successful practices in medical education, business talent cultivation, as well as design and technology. These exchanges, Song added, will support the development of UM’s Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Business Administration, and Faculty of Design, and promote the coordinated development of education, science and technology, and talent cultivation.
At NUS, UM and the university signed a memorandum of understanding on educational cooperation. In the presence of Sam Hou Fai, chief executive of the Macao SAR; Cao Zhongming, Chinese ambassador to Singapore; and George Loh, associate vice president (strategic partnership) at NUS, Song and Ho Han Kiat, dean of students at NUS, signed the memorandum, marking a new milestone in the cooperation between the two universities. Under the memorandum, UM and NUS will strengthen student exchanges and enhance the quality of talent development. At NUS, the UM delegation also visited the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, where they were warmly received by Chong Yap Seng, dean of the school, and other representatives. The delegation toured the Centre for Healthcare Simulation and the Anatomy Museum, and held a working meeting with relevant representatives. The two sides held in-depth discussions on the training of medical professionals, clinical teaching, translational medicine research, and faculty and student exchanges. They also agreed to further strengthen cooperation in medical education and research, which will provide an important international cooperation platform for the future development of UM’s Faculty of Medicine.
At NTU, the UM delegation visited Nanyang Business School, where they were warmly received by Yang Jun, dean of the school. UM and NTU have maintained close ties for many years, with student exchange programmes running for more than a decade. During the visit, Yu Jun, dean of UM’s Faculty of Business Administration, and Yang signed an agreement on joint education collaboration. Building on the two universities’ existing collaboration, the agreement aims to further deepen cooperation in business talent development and provide UM students with a more international and diversified learning experience. The two sides also held a working meeting to explore areas of cooperation in business administration, fintech, talent exchange, and joint postgraduate training, further strengthening collaboration in business education and talent development.
At SUTD, the UM delegation met with Lay-Kee Ang, associate provost (international relations and research) at SUTD. UM and SUTD have run a student exchange programme since 2023, providing cross-cultural learning opportunities for students from both institutions. During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the integration of design and technology, interdisciplinary talent cultivation, faculty and student exchanges, and collaborative research. They also explored the feasibility of establishing closer cooperation with UM’s Faculty of Design. The delegation toured SUTD’s campus and research facilities to gain a deeper understanding of the university’s distinctive approach to engineering and technological innovation driven by design thinking. The visit laid a foundation for future collaboration in design innovation and interdisciplinary research.
Members of the UM delegation also included Zhou Hongtao, interim associate dean of the Faculty of Design; Shen Hanming, interim associate dean of the Faculty of Medicine; and Wang Chunming, director of the Global Affairs Office.
